CloudCamp North East, a review
March 27, 2009 – 10:28 amOn Tuesday night in Newcastle-upon-Tyne we held the first CloudCamp event to be held outside London. The event was held in the Research Beehive at Newcastle University.
The CloudCamp events are setup so that early adopters of the technology can get ‘face time’ with the service providers. With the rapid change occurring in the industry, we need a place we can meet to share our experiences, challenges and solutions. CloudCamp allows for a two way dialogue on the technology that is necessary in the early stages of any technology.
The event was opened by Steve Caughey and then passed to Paul Watson from Newcastle University. After the obligatory fire regulation information we were handed over to Justin Souter who gave a presentation which served as an introduction to Cloud Computing.
The lighting Talk section of the night was as follows:
The presenters were:
- Steve Tron — KnowledgeIT
- Tony Lucas – Flexiscale
- Chris Purrington – CohesiveFT – Taking Control in the Clouds
- Arvid Fossen – Aserver — Cloudcomputing for service providers
- Ross Cooney – Rozmic — Bootstrap and Transition, cloud computing to get your business started
- Alex Heneveld — CloudSoft
- Steve Caughey – Arjuna — ‘How Do You Obtain Quality Of Service from a Cloud?’
- Duncan and Alasdair – EveryCity — Practical Cloud Considerations
- Stewart Townsend — SUN
A lively panel discussion followed where topics such as:
- Interoperability
- Data standards
- What happens if your cloud based service provider goes bust?
- What is the Microsoft Azure product set and how will it mature?
After the speakers we were served free beer and food. For many speakers and attendees this the most important part of the night. It allows the freeflow of information on service models, commercials and technical information.
We would not have been able to put the event together without the help of our sponsors, these were emailcloud, Arjuna, Microsoft, Rightscale, KnowledgeIT, Aserver, Everycity, Flexiscale, CohesiveFT, SUN & CloudSoft. On a final note, we are very grateful to Newcastle University to give us access to the Research Beehive and we hope to bring the vent back to the North East soon.
